Masquerade Beauty: How to Wear Your Makeup Under a Mask

If you're wearing a mask to a Halloween party this weekend, you probably haven't given much thought to your makeup (hello, it's called a mask). But the last thing you want is to take off your mask at the end of the night and really scare people. I talked to makeup artist Sarah Tanno, who's worked with masked crusaders like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, on how to do your makeup when it's being covered for most of the night. Aren't you glad we're here to solve these practical, real-life problems?

Stay face-focused:
You will remove your mask at some point, so make sure your skin looks amazing. Press a long-wearing foundation into the skin with a damp makeup sponge and sweep on a cheek stain. Then, set it all with a finishing spray (Tanno loves Skindinavia Makeup Finishing Spray) rather than powder. "Translucent powders can reflect in camera flashes and look cakey," says Tanno.
Don't be afraid to try a bold lip color:
"It's Halloween—you can get away with more makeup," says Tanno. This season, we're feeling bright, candy apple red or really vibrant fuchsia lipstick. Press on a creamy formula with a brush for opaque, even coverage that lasts all night.
Always amp up the eyes:
Most masks are intended to draw attention to the eyes, so turn up the drama with a smudgy, smoky look. First, prep the lids with an eye-shadow primer or concealer, and then press a black gel pencil into the lash line. Use an eye-shadow brush to blend it up toward the crease and, if you want, dust a colored shadow on top. If you have small eyes, skip black liner (which can make them look smaller) and trace the lower lash line with a beige pencil. Finish with lots of black mascara or false lashes.
Will you be wearing a mask this weekend? What are you dressing up as?
